Welcome to the website for the South Jersey Youth Outdoor Day.  This totally FREE event is held annually on the third Saturday in August.  Its purpose is to provide an opportunity for beginners to learn about and try out various outdoor sports without having to buy any of the equipment or supplies.  No selling or solicitation is done at this event (except for organizations recruiting new members).  The event is based in Salem County, but is open to youth from all of South Jersey.  We encourage youths who have attended in previous years to allow other youths who have never been to this event to participate in it.

Our next event will be held on Saturday, AUGUST 20, 2011 at the Salem County Sportsmen's Club in Carney's Point.  The times of the event are 8:30 am to 2:00 pm, with registrant check-in beginning at 8:00 am.  This event is open to youths age 7 through 17.  All youths must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, who will be responsible for their supervision.  Participation is limited to the first 200 youths registered.  You must register in advance.  No same-day registrations will be accepted.

ACTIVITIES
Every year the planned activities include: non-competitive fishing from the lake shoreline, firearm target shooting (with safety instruction), archery target shooting
(with safety instruction), fly tying, fly fishing casting instruction, canoeing & kayaking, bass boat display, booths hosted by various outdoor organizations and other activies.  See below for the complete schedule of this year's activities.  Please note that some kids may be too small to participate in some activities.  The final decision on that will be made by the instructor at the range safety session (at the start of the event) or by the trained instructors at the individual activities.  We also provide a free lunch of hot dogs and beverages.

REGISTRATION
Registering for the event:  When the registration period begins on July 1, you can register for this event in either one of two ways:
1) Register via email by sending an email note with your information.  Use the link on the lefthand portion of this screen to go to instructions for this process.  Your information will be printed on a form and be brought to the event.  You'll need to stop by the registration table at the start of the event to sign the printed copy of your form.

2) Register via US mail by completing a paper copy of the registration form and mailing it to the registration coordinator.  Three versions of the form are available through links on the lefthand portion of this screen.  Paper copies of the form are also available at some local tackle shops.  Make sure you complete all information requested, sign the form and mail it to the address indicated on the form.   You'll need to check in at the registration table at the start of the event.

Note that participation is limited to the first 200 youths registered.   You must register in advance, so that we can properly estimate the amount of food and supplies required.  (In 2009 we filled up the original 150 spots in seven days.)

Please note that the main event area will be fenced off in the morning, just beyond the clubhouse.  Paricipants are not be permitted in the fenced-in area until the official 8:30 am start time.  The registrant check-in table and range safety sessions will be located at the clubhouse.  After parking, you should proceed to the registrant check-in table and then proceed into the clubhouse to the range safety session area.  Upon completion of a range safety session, participants may proceed to the event entrance at the fenced in area.  At 8:30 am, participants will be permitted to enter the main event area.  We appreciate your cooperation with this process.

Upon check-in at the event registration table, each participant will receive an event card with a lanyard.  This card is to be worn from the participant's neck.  Participants should then proceed to the  range safety session area and sit in on one of the several group sessions being held.  After completion of the range safety session, each participant's card will be marked indicating completion.  In addition, after the completion of certain activities within the event (shooting sports, archery, canoeing/kayaking), the card will be marked so we know who has done an activity at least once.  Participants will not be allowed to do these activities a second time if there are others in line who have not yet done the activity.

REMINDERS
We suggest that, depending on expected weather conditions, attendees come prepared for the expected conditions for that day (sunscreen, sunglasses, insect repellent, rain gear, folding camp chairs, etc).  If you prefer not to take advantage of our free hot dog & beverage lunch, you may want to pack a lunch (free bottles of water are available all day  throughout the event).  Attendees over 16 years of age who plan to fish must have a valid NJ fishing license in their possession.  UPDATE:  WE HAVE OBTAINED PERMISSION FOR THOSE OVER 16 TO FISH WITHOUT A LICENSE DURING THE 2010 EVENT.  For the fishing activities, we suggest that you bring your own rod & reel if you have one.  If you do not own fishing equipment, loaner fishing rods are available at the South Jersey Bass Club Association booth.  We request that you not bring your own firearms or bows.  This equipment will be provided at each shooting-sports activity.  We also request that you not bring pets with you to this event.  Your cooperation is appreciated.

TRASH & RECYCLING Recycle
Please act responsibly by placing all trash in the appropriate containers and any aluminum, plastic and glass in the containers marked for recycled materials.  Thanks.

FEEDBACK
We appreciate all feedback we receive regarding this event.  Organizational meetings are held year-round in order to ensure that this event is as educational, fun, interesting and safe as it can be.  We use the feedback our attendees provide to try to constantly improve our performance.  Feedback/suggestion forms are distributed at the check-in/registration table at the event and feedback comments are accepted via email at any time.
